What’s coming in 2019
by Sigourney Young
To say I’m excited about 2019 would be a bit of an understatement. In a lot of ways, I feel like 2018 passed me by. I shared last week about how 2018 was full of breathtaking highs and some challenging lows. It was also full of life changes – settling into new businesses, a new country, planning a wedding and applying for our spouse visa. More than ever before I felt like life admin was ruling my day. This year, I’m determined to take back control of my studio and my time.
And I’m not going into it with just a resolution and hope, I’ve got labels. Now, this might not sound like much, but let me tell you that a woman with a folder is a force to be reckoned with. I’ve got blogs, projects and collections taking shape. I’m excited to make my business and my studio bigger and better than ever. Most importantly, I’m excited to connect with you, my collectors, readers and fellow music lovers more than ever before.
So what’s coming in 2019 you ask? Let me tell you all about it.
1. The Blog
Several years ago I opened a spreadsheet on my computer and started a list of things I wanted to do in my life. It includes things like ‘learn to make websites’, check; ‘travel overseas to see a band’, check; and ‘put a song on SoundCloud’ no check yet. One of these items is ‘write a blog’ and it’s sat in my folder waiting for the right time. That time is now. I’m committing to sharing one blog a week, every Monday, for the whole of 2019. I set a similar goal in 2018, but I didn’t have labels and I think we can agree that I flailed on that one. Such is life.
From this blog, you can expect pieces exploring my studio and practice, reflections on life and travel, and tips for balancing business and creativity. You’ll also be taken deep into the world of synesthesia with more songs, insights and stories.
2. The Archive
Part of the vision for my art has always been to bring to viewers closer into the world of synesthesia. What is it like to experience such a different way of viewing the world, and how does it translate into the music and sounds that we hold most dear? I want visitors to be able to explore this site and understand the lived experience of synesthesia.
That’s why you can expect my archive to grow even more this year. It’s my goal to build the world’s biggest archive of synesthetic experiences and to share them with all of you. I’ve started by building an archive full of songs you love and will be adding new songs every month.
3. Abstract styles
Since I started creating synesthesia paintings my style has evolved as different aspects of the process took my fancy. My pieces started many years ago as highly abstract. I was just exploring my experience of synesthesia and was painting just the surface colours of a song, the overall effect of the music on my mind. Since then, my art and ability to articulate my own experience have become stronger. I can identify the colours of each subtle sound within the music and have focused on translating this detail into my pieces and my synesthesia descriptions. This has lead to the sequential style of painting that you find most often in my archive. This style gives viewers the full synesthesia experience by following the song sequentially and lining up exactly with the flow of the music.
In 2019, I’ll also be moving back to abstract styles in my work and when you place an order you’ll be able to nominate whether you prefer your piece to be in the abstract or sequential style. I’ll be talking more about this later this month as changes appear on the shop and Etsy but in the meantime just get in touch or add a note to your order letting me know your selected style!
4. Stories from you
Songs have such a special meaning in our lives and I want to capture that magic here in the blog. I spend all my days listening to songs from people around the world and with every song I wonder and imagine the emotions and memories it evokes for the person who has commissioned it. Why is this song, the song? I know there is a magical story behind every song and I want to hear them all. I’ll be asking you, my collectors and readers to submit the story of your song to be featured on the blog. And the best news of all, you can submit right now! Just click here to submit your story.
I think you’ll agree that it’s a big year ahead for synesthesia.art and I got my work cut out for me. Don’t worry though, I’ve got my labels and a fire in my belly. I can’t wait for all of the learning ahead in 2019 and to bring you further into my world than ever before.
Thanks for joining along for the ride.

I’m a synesthesia artist that will be forever found with paint on my nose, dancing around the studio in my yoga pants. I love travel, gluten-free brownies and working from the home studio I share with my husband. My goal? To bring you into the world of synesthesia and to create a space online that celebrates the colour and meaning of music.
