Celebrate your lady friends this Galentine’s Day

by Sigourney Young

What’s Galentine’s Day? Only my new favourite day of the year!

Galentine’s Day is new on the holiday scene but every year it gets more and more popular with colourful brunches, crafts and quotes booming across Pinterest. Created on the show Parks and Recreation, Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope celebrates Galentine’s Day every 13th February.

As Knope explains, “Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies”

If you are looking to build new friendships, maybe Galentine’s could be the perfect chance to ask a new work colleague (or person from class) out for an after-work drink, movie or crafting session!

For Leslie Knope, Galentine’s Day involves waffles and I have to agree that brunch seems to be the way to go. Brunch just has so much going for it. Whether you love eating brunch or would much prefer to go out adventuring, there are lots of ways to celebrate ladies this Galentine’s Day. Here are my tips on how to celebrate the wonderful lady friends in your life.

Brainstorm with your friends

Get your girlfriends together and chat about what you want to do. What is one of your favourite things to do together? Something you’ve always wanted to try? Do you want to spend time celebrating each other or sharing your wins?

Think about what your perfect day looks like and then get to planning!

Perhaps you could all write something you admire about each other or dress up as a woman you admire and bring a fun fact to share! Empowered women empower women and there are so many ways that we can celebrate each other.

Get crafting

Crafting, like Galentine’s Day, is taking us all by storm. I’ve always been a crafter and I’ve been so excited to be able to get crafting with my friends the last few years. Galentine’s Day is a great opportunity for crafting. Make affirmations, quotes, notes or messages of inspiration for each other – get creative! All you really need is some paper and coloured pens to get started. You could even take it to the next level with some paints and some coloured paper for collaging and mood boards!

Make an epic girl-power playlist

It’s hard not to feel inspired when so many awesome ladies are blasting from the speakers. Dance parties with friends and housemates have always been a big part of my life. Some of my favourite memories have been dancing in the kitchen as Taylor Swift played and singing in the car to my favourite anthems with my best friend. Songs about women taking control of their own paths, supporting one another and declaring their flawlessness never fail to get me in the best mood.

I’ve put together some of my favourites to get you started!
