Why you love synesthesia art

by Sigourney Young

This month I’ve been exploring the process of creating synesthesia art. It’s also been the month of love! I thought I’d bring these two themes together to celebrate you, my collectors. I haven’t talked about it yet in this month’s blogs, but one of the biggest parts of the process of creating art is you and your story. You are the reason I make art. Every song that gets shared with me has a special story behind it and every single one makes my heart sing. You inspire me, you motivate me and you welcome me into your home and your story every time I pick up my brushes. So I’m celebrating you, and the memories that make synesthesia art meaningful.

Who you are

You’re someone who believes in the power of music and memory. You’re practical, joyful and not afraid of a little colour. Most importantly, you feel passionately about the people you love. Every day, I hear snapshots of the story behind your song and learn a little more about who you are.

One of my favourite stories was of a couple’s engagement. They had just gotten engaged, and as they sat in the car together the story teller’s future husband called her father to ask his permission. When the conversation ended the song I was to paint started playing, and she told me they were both so happy they just sat in the parking garage of his apartment complex and listened to the song all the way through as they shared a kiss. I imagine them there in that parking garage, how their hearts must have pounded during that call, the sheer joy of the moment when the call ended and they were together. The memories forever tied to, and enhanced, by that song.

You are also people who know and love musicians, have best friends that sing loudly to all your favourite songs, and have parents that sang you to sleep at night. Music permeates your life in all the best moments, and all the hardest. You are the best kind of people and know music has the power to transform.

Where you’re from

You’re from all around the world, though most of you seem to be from the United States. I suspect that’s because of how strong the Etsy brand is in the USA and I’ve been excited to see the focus on makers and original artists grow across the globe.

When I started painting I was based in Australia and sending a painting to Norway seemed like the farthest reaches of the earth. Now my studio is based in York and my pieces are in homes around the world. The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Italy, France, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, Norway and Denmark – we are a worldwide community of individuals who love art, and love music. This also means I’ve painted songs across language and genre.

No matter where you are in the world you are someone who values music and the meaningful. You fill your home with things that spark joy.

What you value

Working with you has also taught me what you value. We know you value music, memories and loved ones, but you also value experience and an artisan service. Through reading the 210 5-star reviews you’ve left me, I know you value quality, communication, customer service and timeliness. I value those things too, and I think that’s why we work so well together!

Knowing that our values align makes creating art for your all the more special. My values; that music matters, that art matters and that a creative business means giving a customer experience deserving of your special memory are on my about page if you ever want to read more about the values that drive my business.

Thank you for inspiring me and for bringing me into the story of your song. If you have a story to share I’d love to hear it and feature it on the blog! Submit it here and you’ll see it online soon.
