Mother’s Day is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a story about a song that means so much to this mother and daughter. Every so often I get to paint a song that takes me totally by surprise, with Kaleigh and her mom, this was one of those moments. Kaleigh, the photographer behind Wonderstruck Photography got in touch to commission the perfect gift for her music-loving mom.

Their song ‘Rainbow Connection’ performed by none other than Kermit The Frog, is a sweet and meaningful melody that Kaleigh explains:

“brings my mom to tears 100% of the time- it instantly transports her back to my young childhood”

Every year, particularly as Mother’s Day approaches I have the opportunity to paint songs that capture these special childhood moments, and the connection between mothers and daughters. Some are songs sung together like Kaleigh’s ‘Rainbow Connection’, while others are songs that might remind moms of their child’s teenage years – Firestarter by Prodigy – or of the bond they share as they move to adulthood – Where You Lead by Carole King.

For Kaleigh, synesthesia art was the obvious choice for her mom. She shared:

“Half of my family were music educators or performers of some sort- I grew up knowing and loving music and experiencing how it can make you feel. There’s a special kind of magic to it, to *see* a piece of music that you’ve always loved, and experience it in a new way is something very special.”

It wasn’t hard to pick the song either, Rainbow Connection was the first one that sprang to mind.

“It’s a song I’ve known as long as I can remember. It’s such a simple, beautiful piece of music with such a wonderful message – I’ve always loved it. For me, it’s a combination of the sweet melody with the content of the lyrics that had made this one of my all-time favourites. And while it doesn’t connect to any specific memory,  it just creates an overall feeling of well being. This song definitely connects my mama and myself”
